How is vaccination carried out in pharmacies? Which pharmacies and patients are involved? Let's find out in the rest of this article.
Who is eligible for pharmacy vaccination?
According to the recommendations of the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de Santé), only people aged 55 to 74 with co-morbidities, or a pathology that increases the risk of contracting a severe form of the disease, can benefit from the Covid-19 vaccine.
All people aged 75 or over are also eligible for vaccination. However, those with a history of allergic reaction to one of the components in the vaccine cannot be vaccinated.
Which vaccines can be administered in pharmacies?
At present, the vaccination campaign in pharmacies is being conducted exclusively with the Astrazeneca vaccine. However, in the coming weeks, other vaccines may be arriving in pharmacies. These include the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are currently reserved for hospitals and vaccination centers.
Indeed, a scientific discovery has highlighted the possibility of storing these vaccines for two weeks at -20 degrees, and 5 days in a conventional refrigerator, compared with -80 degrees at present (a storage condition impossible to implement in pharmacies).
Which pharmacies are able to vaccinate against Covid-19?
Pharmacies able to offer vaccination to their patients are those registered with the Order and declared to theRegional Health Agency. It should also be pointed out that pharmacists must have undergone specific training to be able to provide vaccinations, covering such topics as the principles of vaccination, side effects and contraindications, as well as vaccine storage and conservation methods.

Making an appointment
Appointments are not systematically required for vaccinations given in pharmacies, unlike those given in vaccination centers. As a result, the pharmacy of your choice can decide whether or not to set up a booking system. It may also opt for a waiting list. Don't hesitate to contact your usual pharmacy to find out about the different time slots available.
Obtaining a prescription from your doctor
People suffering from a pathology with a very high risk of a severe form of Covid-19 must obtain a prescription from a general practitioner before being vaccinated. The same applies to pregnant women and patients with haemostasis disorders.
However, people aged 75 and over can obtain their first injection without a prescription. Pharmacists can not only vaccinate, but also dispense the vaccine without a prescription.
Health questionnaire
Before being vaccinated, patients will be asked to complete a health questionnaire, so that the pharmacist can ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria and are given priority. During this questionnaire, the pharmacist will also take the opportunity to remind patients of the vaccine's side effects, as well as the time between the first and second injections.
Injection and recording in a database
Injecting the Covid-19 vaccine takes just a few seconds. Once completed, the pharmacist records the procedure in a database called Vaccin Covid. Here, information such as the serial number of the product injected, the name of the pharmacist and the patient, etc. is entered. After the first dose of vaccine has been injected, the patient must wait 15 minutes to be treated in the event of an allergic reaction.
Performing the second dose
Astrazeneca vaccine should be given 4 to 12 weeks apart.
Covid-19 vaccination: what is the cost?
The French Assurance Maladie covers the cost of vaccination in pharmacies. As a result, you won't have to pay anything on the day of your appointment. However, you will need to present your "carte vitale" to be reimbursed.
